Manchester United Hunts New Goalkeeper

It would seem as if Manchester United are on the hunt for a new goalkeeper. Around a month ago they were linked with Inter Milan’s first choice stopper Julio Cesar, and now they’re rumoured to be weighing up a move for Bayer Leverkusen goalkeeper Rene Adler.

So do Manchester United need another goalkeeper? Current number one Edwin Van der Sar is 39-years-old and can’t go on forever, in fact I’d probably give him another season at best and mistakes were creeping into his game at the end of last season. Understudy Ben Foster failed to impress when he stood in for the veteran Dutchman during Van der Sar’s injury absence and it seems he is not yet ready to take the top spot at Old Trafford.

German international Adler was at Anfield to witness Manchester United’s loss last weekend, usually a good indication the club and player are already in dialogue. However, Leverkusen boss Rudi Voller claimed he was just taking in the action in Liverpool.

He told German publication the Rheinische Post: “I am delighted to see players being so much involved with their job they travel long distances to witness other matches,

“I am happy to see Rene being linked to big clubs right now, this is the best signal we have that we have a very good player on our hands and not so much wrong when setting up our squad.”

I’m not so sure Adler is just ‘involved’ with his job personally but if that is Voller’s line then fair enough! Another Bundesliga keeper who has been linked with the current Premier League Champions is Schalke’s Manuel Neuer and it seems a pretty safe online bet United will add another keeper to their ranks soon.

This also raises questions about Foster’s position at the club. He has England ambitions and although he might not be good enough for the number one spot a Old Trafford he may be able to take the top place at another Premier League club. The goalkeeping position in the England squad is perhaps the weakest area and it really is a position up for grabs at the moment, If another keeper arrives I’m betting Foster leaves not long after as he won’t want to be second best for much longer.
