Alex Ferguson:Homegrown Dream Is Over

Sir Alex Ferguson reckons there will never be a repeat of Manchester United’s homegrown golden boys.

Veteran stars such as Paul Scholes, Ryan Giggs and Gary Neville are still key men at Old Trafford.

They emerged at the same time as the departed David Beckham and Phil Neville to help United to a unprecedented run of success.

But Fergie, who oversaw their progress at the Red Devils, believes clubs can no longer dream of bringing through a similar glut of aces.

The United boss said: “Every club hopes to produce players who will last in this way but in these days with freedom of contract I don’t think you will see it much more.

“Ryan has been here 21 years, with Paul and Gary on 19 years. That is absolutely exceptional and we have been very lucky.

“But I believe it is unlikely that we will see their like again.”
